Do you remember *service packs* on your XP computers?
XP was an old Windows operating system which was updated regularly by Microsoft through patch releases. Occasionally, the changes needed represented a bigger change than weekly patching. As this required significant modifications to the existing system, a service pack would be released. The service pack had to be intentionally installed rather than being automatically applied. It amounted, in effect, to an operating system upgrade, and you would refer to your system version as *XP SP1* rather than simply *XP*.
Service Packs became of thing of the past with the demise of Windows 8, but the concept of major updates requiring specific installation did not. Enter *Feature Updates*.
Every IT support company worth their salt has been banging on about the end of WINDOWS 11 SUPPORT for some time now. Their customers have been encouraged to upgrade their existing PCs or purchase replacement kit.
If you are using a Windows 11 machine, you may be feeling pretty smug; job done, I’m up to date! Don’t be too quick to rest on your laurels, though. It’s not just the operating system which has an expiry date; feature updates do too!
*Windows 11 23H2* reaches the end of its life on 11 November 2025. Just as Windows 10 PCs will no longer receive security patches after October, computers with Windows 11 with older feature update versions will cease to be supported too.
The purpose of this blog:
Operating systems and feature updates are not glamourous subjects, but being vulnerable to cyber threats when you could have patched your computer is not a good look either.
It’s yet another reason for working with a Managed Services Provider (MSP). For the peace of mind which comes from knowing your IT kit is up to date, Computer Troubleshooters has your back.
